What is Pitta Dosha?
A dynamic equilibrium amidst fire, earth, water, air, and space energies (5 elements of nature) forms a holistic functional principle that determines the composition and nature of everything from rocks to humans. These three principles are Pitta dosha, Vata dosha, and Kapha dosha.
Out of these, Pitta dosha is composed and indicative of fire and water. It is responsible for transformation and metabolism in the body and is associated with various functions such as digestion, metabolism, body temperature, and energy production. Pitta is also responsible for intellectual and cognitive abilities, as well as courage, ambition, and competitiveness.
When in balance, Pitta dosha promotes smooth metabolism and sharp intellect. If there is an imbalance, the same could lead to multiple health and mental issues such as diarrhea, acidity, stomach aches, low mental stability, inflammation, skin rashes, irritability, anger, and excessive sweating.
Reasons for Pitta Imbalance
Long hours of sun exposure:
Sun gives us vitamin D which is good for our health, but long sun exposure increases the Pitta, hampering our health. Midday, that is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is considered Pitta time. This is because at this time sun is at its highest peak and emits strong UVA and UVB radiations. Exposing yourself to these radiations leads to aggravation of Pitta which causes skin cancer.
Eating food that aggravates imbalance:
Food that is excessively spicy, sour, or salty is known to produce heat. The dissipation of this heat in our body aggravates Pitta dosha.
Excess of caffeine:
Caffeine is not just addictive, it even harms our health. Consuming drinks and food that contain caffeine like coffee, tea, etc. can lead to excess acid production and inflammation resulting in Pitta imbalance.
Anxiety and depression:
The emotional state of a person adversely affects the levels of Pitta. Emotional factors such as anger, frustration, and excessive ambition can disturb Pitta dosha. These further affect the mental state of a person.
Hormonal imbalance:
As per Ayurvedic science, hormones known as “dhatu” agni are a part of Pitta dosha since their transportation medium is blood. Imbalance in the levels of hormones in our body creates high levels of Pitta that affect our metabolism.
